One of the things I feel strongly about is making puppetry accessible. Not just as something to watch, but as something to make. Puppet kits came out of that conviction. I design, fabricate, and sell puppet kits at markets and festival events across the Bay Area, giving people of all ages and skill levels the materials and instructions they need to build their own puppet at home.
Designing a kit is its own interesting creative challenge. It has to be simple enough that someone with no puppet building experience can complete it successfully, while being open-ended enough that the maker can put their own personality into what they create.
The best kits are the ones that produce something genuinely expressive and individual rather than a uniform output. You want every puppet that comes out of the kit to look different, because every maker is different.
Selling kits at events like the One Market Plaza Holiday Market and the Northern California Puppet Festival has been a wonderful way to connect with people who might never have thought of themselves as puppet makers. Watching someone pick up a kit, look slightly uncertain, and then come back later to show me what they made with it, that never gets old.
